The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
