No fewer than thirteen individuals killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were executed at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
