In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Consultations Underway
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
