Users Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using new GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural management.
